The Three of Swords is the first card in the suit of Swords that shows its painful consequences. A sword is a powerful weapon that can cut through obstacles, but also inflict wounds. Symbolic of the mental realm, thoughts and words, it can inflict pain if not used with care and kindness.

 

The main theme of this card is emotional pain and heartbreak. The pain has to be felt in order to be released.
